Canny Clay

Hi, my name is Su and I'm originally from Newcastle upon Tyne (hence the name!).

I have always loved arts and crafts, but it wasn't until I experimented with polymer clay that I got the real bug! I love the versatility of the medium and all the different possibilities you can create. My main focus is on jewellery, especially earrings, which now entering my later years, I have rediscovered my love for bold, colourful and different earrings (I was definitely an earring fan in the 80's!).

I take inspiration from almost anywhere, from loving a piece of clothing for its colour scheme, walking through the woods and noticing shapes and patterns and noticing geometric patterns and art deco styles in a hotel. Some of my pieces happen by accident, working with leftover clay and letting the natural creativity flow.

Working from my home, I make each piece as individual as possible, mixing colours, textures, embellishments and then finally adding the findings (the metal attachments) to suit the piece best – I can spend ages deciding on these.

I am now retired from my chosen career as a Statistician and now totally focussed on my art. Who knows what I may have created by now if my dad hadn’t persuaded me to study maths rather than art at university?
